About the museum
Øyfjell bygdemuseum lies in the village of Øyfjell in Vinje municipality and is run by Vest-Telemark Museum. The main building was erected in 1931 in granite, which was meant to last forever. Here tools, costumes, rose painting (rosemaling) and various household objects from the village are displayed.
Outside there is a farmyard with several old buildings. In Mostøylstoga the parlour (stue) has been restored, and its interior shows the fashion of the late 19th century, a style that is rare in Vest-Telemark. The room reopened after restoration in summer 2005.
The museum also shows the country's largest beer bowl (ølbolle) and a barrel which, according to an old register card, belonged to two Frenchmen, Bézier and Rollier. They flew by hot-air balloon from Paris to Lifjell in Bø during the war in 1870.
