About the museum
Norsk myrmuseum (Norwegian Bog Museum) is housed in the cowshed at Moldstad experimental farm in the middle of Smøla and is part of Nordmørsmusea. The experimental farm was closed on 1 January 1995, which marked the end of an era of effort in bog cultivation and land reclamation in Norway. The experimental farm at Mære and the companies Ny Jord and Det norske Myrselskap had by then already been closed or merged with others.
Strong forces in the local community wanted Moldstad to become a museum, so that the knowledge of bog cultivation and the history of the organised land reclamation in Norway could be told. The museum has a national perspective, but it also deals with the work at the research farm at Frostadheia, which was an important national centre for land reclamation and research on bogs.
The museum cooperates with regional and national professional communities in today's bog research and agriculture. The themes are bog cultivation, peat extraction, land reclamation, emigration and bog nature, and the archive can be visited all year by request.
