About the museum
Sanden is an upper-class residence from the 1700s on Veiholmen on Smøla and is part of Nordmørsmusea. The property shows how a family that fished, traded fish and farmed lived in a small fishing village far out on the Nordmør coast in the 1800s and 1900s.
Sanden belonged to the Eckhoff family from 1795 to 1984, when Smøla museum bought the properties. Anders and Berndine Eckhoff, who married in 1875, and their nine children lived in the house. Six of the children emigrated to America, and only three stayed in Norway. Astrid and her brother Karl Johan lived at Sanden all their lives.
The property consists of five buildings, and all the houses stand today as Astrid left them when she died in 1983. The interior of the main house is authentic, and Sanden tells the story of trade, fishing, emigration to America and everyday life at the outermost edge of the coast more than a hundred years ago.
