About the museum
Mjøssamlingene at Minnesund is Mjøsa’s own maritime museum and tells the story of the inland coastal culture: boats and freight on Mjøsa, presented through storehouses, workshops and veteran boats in their original setting. The lake was an important route linking the people of Innlandet. The site lies at Minne, just below the E6 bridge over Minnesund.
“Skibladner” was riveted together and launched at Minne in 1856. It is still the only place where “Mjøsas hvite svane” (Mjøsa’s white swan) can be brought ashore when she needs an overhaul, and Mjøssamlingene has a modern slipway adapted to the ship. The world’s oldest paddle steamer still in operation is hauled out on the Minne slipway at least every third year.
The collection is owned and looked after by the volunteer association Foreningen Mjøssamlingene and includes houses, objects, installations and boats, both vessels on water, on land and under water. The site is run and managed by Mjøsmuseet AS. In the summer season there is a guided tour every Sunday with a guide or museum host, and the museum holds events such as Sjørøverdagen (Pirate Day), with plank-boat building and treasure hunts, and Motordagen (Engine Day), when old engines in the collection are started. The association holds a coffee meeting on the first Thursday of each month in the former captain’s house, Amundstua.
