About the museum

The idea of a forestry museum was first raised at the jubilee exhibition at Frogner in 1914 and gained momentum after a major forestry exhibition at Glomdalsmuseet in 1953. In 1954 the founders agreed to set up the museum. Elverum municipality made the island of Prestøya in the Glomma available, and the forestry sector paid for a suspension bridge to it.

The first directors, the archaeologists Arne Skjølsvold and Anne Stine Ingstad, built up an open-air museum with huts and installations from forestry, hunting and fishing. The large, fireproof museum building, designed by Terje Torstensen, was completed in 1970. The aquarium opened in 1979, and the building was extended in 1991.

The museum was merged with Klevfos Industrimuseum in 2003 and has been part of Anno museum since 2014. It has national responsibility for hunting, trapping, angling, forestry, the forest industry, natural resource management and outdoor life, and it also manages Sørlistøa fløtermuseum (log-driving museum) by Osensjøen.
