About the museum
Rindal skimuseum has its roots in the local museum established in the 1960s, which showed a farmyard with old houses from the area. In 2014 the museum reopened as a ski museum in Heggemsfjøset, a timber-built farm building from 1780 that has been extended with modern additions designed by Inger Anne Landsem of Pir 2 arkitekter. The building was nominated for the Statens byggeskikkpris (Norwegian State Prize for Building Culture) in 2015, and the museum was nominated for the European museum prize EMYA in 2017.
The museum tells of skis and ski-making, from the time when skis were made on almost every farm, to the period when Rindal became a centre of Norwegian ski production with four ski factories. The collection includes skis, equipment, clothing, prizes, machines from the factories, photographs and documents, and more than 3,000 objects are registered in Digitalt museum.
Outside, fifteen old houses stand on a traditional farmyard, among them a trønderlån (traditional Trøndelag long house), a storehouse (stabbur), an eldhus, a threshing barn (trøskarlåve), a cotter's farm (husmannsplass) and a quern house. The old Trondhjemske postvei (Trondheim post road) from the 1700s runs through the farmyard. The museum is part of Museene i Sør-Trøndelag (MiST) and a department of Orkla Industrimuseum.
