About the museum
Åsen bygdemuseum is an open-air museum on the old farm Åsen at Eidet in Surnadal and is part of Nordmørsmusea. The collection spans from rock carvings 5,000 years old to the kitchen revolution of the 1950s.
A large part of the museum is the building collection, which represents various types of traditional buildings from the area. The museum has two listed buildings: a smoke-oven room (røykovnstue) and a storehouse (stabbur) with two log chests. Inside the main buildings there are small thematic exhibitions on local history and on crafts, including costumes and textiles.
Åsen also has a history as a municipal nursing home from 1910 until the early 1970s, a forerunner of today's nursing home (sykehjem). The museum is open at announced events, and groups can book a visit in the summer half-year.
