About the museum
Geitbåtmuseet lies in Valsøyfjord and is a department of Nordmørsmusea. The museum has a unique collection of over 50 geitbåter in various sizes and is at the same time a living museum, where coastal culture and traditional crafts are conveyed through activities, exhibitions and workshops.
The geitbåt was built and used in Nordmøre and parts of Romsdal, and it belongs to the oldest layer of traditional boats in Norway. A special feature is that the lowest strakes (bordgangene) are hewn to shape, and both rigging and sails have remained almost unchanged for several hundred years. The geitbåt is important for understanding the development of Norwegian boat tradition, and the museum is therefore an important knowledge base both nationally and in the Nordic countries.
The museum also includes Husasnotra, a year-round training and production facility. Here craftsmen with journeyman's certificates (svennebrev) receive three years of practice-based training in historical building techniques, and boats and buildings are built and restored on commission.
