About the museum
Rygge museum came into being in the early 1990s. Cultural director Gerd Kolstad had worked for a museum in Rygge and got help to renovate the old Fylkesskolen (county school) by Rygge church, a building from 1914. In spring 1992 a volunteer effort was started to complete the work, and it was decided to make a museum based on what was special to the municipality: the cultural landscape, which was a model area in the Nordic Council of Ministers' project “Nature and Cultural Landscape in Land-Use Planning”.
The museum shows an exhibition on the cultural landscape on the ground floor and several exhibitions on the mezzanine. The museum has four buildings in all. In a storehouse (stabbur) on the main site, Rygge defence association has created an extensive permanent exhibition on the history of Norway's defence. On the other side of the road lies a smithy from 1863, which was run by the Solberg family until the 1980s before it was moved to the museum, and the Tollefsrød storehouse.
In 2014 Rygge museum and Rygge Historielag merged into Rygge museum og historielag, a voluntary association that runs the museum and the farmyard with its historic buildings.
