About the museum
Salangen bygdetun lies at the end of a dead-end road in Prestbakklia in Sjøvegan and is run by Sør-Troms Museum. Settlers from the south cleared land in Øvre Salangen towards the end of the 1700s, and in the 1700s and 1800s more people moved from the south to Indre Troms in the hope of a better future. The museum shows the blend of southern and northern culture, including dialect, food and building traditions.
The main house, Limostua, is a two-storey house from 1870, named after the Limo family, and every room has an interior display. The collection has around 1,500 objects, mostly household items and furniture for the main house, as well as a complete shoemaker's workshop and various carpentry tools. Originally seven buildings were moved here: the main house, a barn, a stabbur (raised storehouse), a hayloft, a bu (storage hut), a smithy and a mill.
