About the museum
Salangsverket was established after iron ore was found at Storhaugen, a mountain area seven to eight kilometres north-east of the plant. Shipping of ore began in 1910, after only three years of construction. Several hundred people came to Salangen for paid work, and trade and service businesses grew up. The town centre was moved from Sjøvegan to Medby, where cafés, a hairdresser and shops opened.
The operation did not last long, however. By 1912 shipping had ended and commercial operations were discontinued. There are several explanations: the ore was not of high enough quality, the price fell, and more promising deposits turned up elsewhere, including on Svalbard. Difficult snow conditions and large differences in altitude were also a strain on the equipment.
Today Salangsverket is an open-air museum, and the tall ruins are a reminder of a loud and busy time. The area is accessible all year round, and visitors can move around freely. Sør-Troms Museum recommends combining the visit with a walk to Storhaugen, where many traces of the ore adventure can also be seen, especially in summer.
