About the museum
Skaland Bergverksmuseum is housed in the old district office in Berg, known as “Kvithuset”, on the outer side of Senja (Yttersiden). Midt-Troms Museum runs it to preserve the mining history of Yttersiden through exhibitions, documentation, pictures, objects and the buildings themselves. Kvithuset is also the working base for the museum and for Bergverksmuseets Venneforening (Friends of the Mining Museum), which registers objects and pictures, digitises photographs and accepts donations from the area.
The museum covers two closed mining areas. The nickel works in Hamn operated from 1876 under Henry Hussey Vivian and produced nickel ore until it closed in 1886. It was an almost self-sufficient community with its own church, shop, bakers and doctor. Skaland Grafittverk (graphite works) started in 1918, and graphite production continued largely without interruption until the 1980s. A fire in 1985 caused great damage, and the mine is now owned by Leonhard Nilsen & Sønner, which has a new mine at Trælen.
