About the museum
Sømna bygdetun lies by Sømna church in Gamle Vik. The department's main focus is farming and food culture, which is reflected in the buildings and exhibitions. The kitchen garden with old grain varieties, cultivated plants, herbs and vegetables can be visited both inside and outside opening hours, and signs tell about the plants. The church site in Vik goes back to the Middle Ages, and right next to the farmyard stands the neo-Gothic timber church from 1876.
Mikkelborghuset from 1899 is the only building that was not moved here, and it is used today as a museum shop, café and office. Sømhovdstua from 1812 was the first house moved to the farmyard, in 1982. Øystrandstua has a wood-fired bread oven and is used to communicate about baking, and the farmyard also has a husmannsstue (cotter's cottage), a husmannsfjøs (cotter's cowshed), a stabbur (storehouse), a låve (barn) with old farm tools, a kvernhus (quern house), a skott (small shed) and a rorbu (fishermen's cabin).
In mid-July an old-fashioned hay harvest with scythe mowing and hay drying (hesjing) is held, and bread is baked in the bread oven. The farmstead has fixed opening hours in summer and before Christmas, but it is open all year round and visits can be arranged. It is part of Helgeland Museum.
