About the museum
Bindal museum is in the main building at Terråk, the administrative centre of Bindal. The exhibition tells of the local use of timber as a material, of forestry past and present, of the timber industry with emphasis on Risøybruket, and of Bindalsbruket and boatbuilding, where the bindalsfæring (Bindal boat type) and other types of Nordland boats (nordlandsbåter) are central. The department also has a small collection of objects connected with Southern Sámi life and culture. A main natural-history theme is the boreal rainforest, with rich lichen flora and several red-listed species.
All visitors are shown round the exhibition, and the museum shop sells books on historical topics, mostly from Helgeland and the rest of Northern Norway. The museum offers lectures and tailored programmes for groups, businesses, clubs and associations.
Helgeland Museum also runs Bindal bygdetun, three kilometres north of Terråk, which is part of the cultural heritage trail at Vassås. The houses there are open for part of the summer and by request, and the area has a water point, a campfire pit and a play frame.
