About the museum
Minnetun is the cradle of Velfjord bygdemuseum and lies a few kilometres from Gamle Samvirkelaget in Hommelstø. On the farmstead stand thirteen buildings from the 17th and 19th centuries, which together show different aspects of everyday life on a farm in that time. The main building, Langfjordhågsstua, is the oldest and largest dwelling house. The museum has a rich collection of farm tools and other utility objects (bruksting) for house, home and craft.
The site was built up by Velfjord Historielag (Velfjord Local History Society), founded in 1939. Harald Strøm was a strong driving force and the museum’s first curator (bestyrer), and the author and folklore collector Knut Strompdal, who published the book series “Gamalt frå Helgeland” (Old from Helgeland), was involved from the start and has had his own memorial stone set up on the farmstead.
In 2019 Velfjord historielag set up a South Sámi kåte, derhvie-gåetie, with an associated earth cellar and storehouse (njalla) at Minnetun. The kåte is open all year and holds 15 people for bonfire coffee or Sámi reindeer stew. Minnetun is part of Helgeland Museum.
