About the museum

Son kystkultursenter (Son Coastal Culture Centre) lies in the heart of Son, on the site that was formerly Soon Baadbyggeri (the Soon boatyard). Son is one of the best-preserved towns with old timber buildings along the Oslofjord. The centre aims to convey knowledge of coastal culture and develop it, shows changing exhibitions and offers activities connected with wooden boats and fishing.

On the site stand, among other buildings, Jostushuset, which tells the story of a fisherman’s home from Son, the preserved forge from the old boatyard and the spøytehuset. The centre also has a slipway for wooden boats and a museum harbour.

Son kystkultursenter was for many years a department under Follo museum and MiA – Museene i Akershus. MiA no longer wanted the centre as a department, and Vestby municipal council resolved on 20 April 2020 to take over the buildings free of charge. Since 2021 the municipality has had an agreement with Son kystkultursenters venner (the friends association) and Soon Water Kystlag on operating it. The friends association covers much of the maintenance and the activities at Easter, through the summer, in the school autumn and winter holidays and in the run-up to Christmas, and it runs an open café with rømmevafler (sour-cream waffles), coffee and cold drinks.
