About the museum
Holmsbu kunstmuseum is located at Støa in Holmsbu and manages a collection consisting mainly of works by the three Holmsbu painters, Henrik Sørensen, Thorvald Erichsen and Oluf Wold-Torne. The museum also owns sketches, peasant antiquities, faience from the 18th century, books and documentation. The museum aims to present the Holmsbu colony and the life and work of Henrik Sørensen in dialogue with current cultural expressions and the surrounding nature.
The Holmsbu colony was founded in 1911 by Oluf Wold-Torne, Thorvald Erichsen and Henrik Sørensen, and became the longest-lived of the Norwegian artists' colonies. It was active for 50 years, until 1961, and several well-known artists visited it, among them Axel Revold, Alf Rolfsen, Jean Heiberg, Harald Kihle and Per Krohg. Henrik Sørensen became the colony's most prominent artist and spiritual leader.
The museum was established and funded in 1973 by the nuclear physicist Sven Oluf Sørensen, son of Henrik Sørensen. The building was designed by the architect Bjart Mohr, clad in red Hurum granite from the area, and has interior references to French medieval art. It received the Houens fond diploma in 1979 and is listed. The museum was formerly called Holmsbu billedgalleri and was owned by a foundation and run by Drammens museum. Asker municipality took over ownership in summer 2024, and from 2025 the museum is run by MiA – Museene i Akershus.
