About the museum

Vefsn museum in Mosjøen is housed in Jacobsenbrygga, a yellow-painted wharf building on Sjøgata. The core exhibition “Historien om en by” (“The Story of a Town”) tells how Mosjøen became Helgeland's first town in 1875. Throughout the year the wharf's galleries show various exhibitions, and during the Festspillene Helgeland and Galleria festivals several of the museum's wharves are used as venues for art and concerts.

Sjøgata is Mosjøen's oldest district and one of the town's biggest tourist attractions, with several protected buildings that together tell the story of life in Mosjøen from the 1700s to the present. The museum's guides take visitors on a historical walk along the street. At the end of Sjøgata stands what the museum knows to be Nordland's and Northern Norway's oldest surviving petrol station, built in 1933 and protected by the Riksantikvaren (Directorate for Cultural Heritage) in 2016.

The museum shop in Jacobsenbrygga sells place-specific souvenirs, local literature, nostalgic wooden toys and postcards. The museum is a department of Helgeland Museum.
