About the museum
Ville Krefter is housed in the old Tafjord 1 power station in the middle of Tafjord. Tafjord Kraftproduksjon was established in 1917, and the first power station in Tafjord was completed in 1923. The station was in operation until 1989 and was then converted into a museum. All the original machines remain in the large machine hall, which has been partly upgraded to house the new centre.
In the machine hall you can see water turbines and machines side by side, the original machine exhibition from 1923, and historical pictures and equipment. The centre also has its own exhibition and experience about the Tafjord disaster, “Dommedagsfjellet – ei tidsreise” (“Doomsday Mountain – a journey through time”). In the night of 7 April 1934 the mountainside Langhammaren collapsed into the fjord, and the tsunami that followed killed 40 people in Tafjord and Fjørå.
In Skredsalen visitors can learn about monitoring of rockslides, including at Åkneset and Mannen, create their own rockslide in a simulator and measure how much electricity they produce themselves in the rørskli (pipe slide). The centre also has a climbing wall with an instructor, a bouldering wall for children, a via ferrata and abseiling down the Zakariasdemningen dam, and a separate exhibition on wild reindeer and Reinheimen National Park.
