About the museum
The beginnings of the Baraniogórski Mountain Tourism Culture Centre go back to 1967, and its initiator was Edward Moskała, chairman of the Subcommittee for History and Museums of the Mountain Tourism Commission of PTTK (Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society). After the old hut was moved to Wisła, the outbuilding of the former hut was handed over for the centre’s use in 1989. In 1993 the building was taken over by the Baraniogórska Section, formed by guides from Katowice, who renovated the building with their own resources and gathered the first collections.
The centre opened on 12 November 1994 as the Museum of Mountain Tourism of the Silesian Beskids (Muzeum Turystyki Górskiej Beskidu Śląskiego). The exhibition occupies 40 m² in three rooms. The first shows the oldest documents, display cases of tourist societies, old guidebooks, photographs, postcards, badges and walking sticks with commemorative plates. The second room presents tourist publications, the history of skiing in the Silesian Beskids, a collection of skis, visitors’ books from the huts, memorabilia from the construction of the observation tower on Baranią Górą, and a folklore corner with folk costumes and shepherd’s equipment. The third room contains panels about other mountain centres in the Carpathians and replicas of signs from the area of Baranią Górą.
In the guides’ duty room there is a small kiosk with maps, postcards and commemorative stamps of the centre and the tower. The centre is run voluntarily by guides and operates at weekends during the tourist season.
