About the museum

The idea of a centre for the history of mountain tourism below Barania Góra dates back to the 1960s. Earlier centres of the PTTK Mountain Tourism Commission, including the one at Markowe Szczawiny below Babia Góra, served as models. For a long time, however, the matter was limited to meetings and correspondence.

In 1989 the outbuilding of a former mountain hut at Przysłop was handed over to the centre, and in July 1993 it was taken over by the Barania Góra Section, made up of guides from Katowice. Over the following months the building was renovated through voluntary work and the exhibition rooms were prepared. The centre “U źródeł Wisły” (At the Source of the Vistula) opened on 12 November 1994, with the participation of regional authorities, PTTK and several hundred hikers.

The exhibition covers about 40 m² and consists of three rooms. The first contains documents and memorabilia from the beginnings of tourism in the Silesian Beskids, including materials of tourist societies and the Beskidenverein, old guidebooks and badges. The second shows, among other things, the history of skiing, commemorative books of the huts, memorabilia connected with the building of the observation tower on Barania Góra, and folk costumes and shepherds' equipment. The third presents other centres of mountain tourism in the Carpathians. The centre also includes a guides' duty room with a kiosk.
