About the museum
The museum’s origins go back to 1970, when the Station for Collecting Cultural Assets and Disseminating Knowledge about the Region was set up in Puck. The first exhibition devoted to Kashubian culture opened in 1973 in a former almshouse known as the Szpitalik. In 1980 the station was turned into a museum, and in the following years ethnographic, historical and archaeological departments were established; the last one is linked to the discovery of an early medieval port in Puck Bay.
In 1987, after a thorough renovation, the Kamienica Mieszczańska and the open-air museum in Nadole were opened to the public; the Kamienica is still the museum’s main seat. In 2000 the institution was given the name of Florian Ceynowa, a Kashubian activist and researcher of folklore. In 2013 the Hallerówka in Władysławowo came under the museum’s care, and in 2014 a new ethnographic exhibition opened in the Szpitalik.
The Kamienica Mieszczańska stands on the northern side of Puck’s market square; its neo-Gothic gable dates from the 19th century. Since 2021 it has housed the permanent exhibition “Prawdziwie morskie – Dzieje Ziemi Puckiej” (Truly Maritime – History of the Puck Region), which presents the town’s history against the background of Northern Kashubia. The most valuable exhibits include the Bronze Age hoard from Władysławowo and an amber hoard from the 2nd century AD, found beneath the foundations of the Teutonic Order’s castle.
