About the museum
Czocha Castle was built in 1241–1247 as a stronghold on the Silesian–Lusatian border, and its strategic position meant that it often changed owners: from the Silesian Piasts and Bohemian rulers to the families von Dohn, von Klüks and von Nostitz. It stands on rocks above the River Kwisa, today above the Leśniański Reservoir (Zalew Leśniański).
In 1909 the castle was bought by Ernst Gütschow, a cigar manufacturer from Dresden. In 1912–1920 the Berlin architect Bodo Ebhardt remodelled it after its appearance in engravings from the early 18th century, creating representative interiors. Gütschow lived in the castle until March 1945. Today the property belongs to the company AMW Rewita.
Visitors learn about the castle with a guide: the Knights' Hall (Sala Rycerska), the Marble Hall (Sala Marmurowa) with its fireplace shrouded in legend, the Library Hall (Sala Biblioteczna) with its Masonic symbolism, the Portrait Hall with likenesses of the Piasts, the Ducal Chamber and the Treasury. The castle also has an exhibition of communication equipment used by the army in the times of the People's Republic of Poland, and treasures found during the 2015 restoration. The castle is famous for its night tours, multimedia torture chambers, a cabinet of curiosities, and open-air events and role-playing games.
