About the museum
Dom Długosza is a two-storey, late Gothic brick building which the canon Jan Długosz founded in 1460 as housing for the vicars and canons of the collegiate church in Wiślica. The house had, among other things, a library, halls, rooms, a kitchen, a bathhouse, a well and a heating system, and beneath it are six cellars in which residents sheltered during raids and bombardments. Since 1460 the building has served as a parish house, and priests serving in the parish still live there today.
Inside, beamed ceilings with remnants of wall painting have survived, and on the upper floor is the refectory, the former dining room of the priests. A unique late 15th-century Gothic wall painting was also discovered here, showing the Risen Christ and a kneeling figure, which is considered a probable likeness of Jan Długosz. Studies from 1961 confirmed that later alterations had not damaged the structure and appearance of the building.
The house now contains a parish museum, opened in 2023 in one of the ground-floor halls. Visitors can see two historic halls with memorabilia linked to the house and the collegiate basilica, and the cellars with fragments of altars and sacred sculpture from the collegiate church, which was damaged in a bombardment in 1915. Underground there is also a multimedia room with a film about the monuments of Wiślica.
