About the museum
Galeria “Panorama” is a branch of the Muzeum Ziemi Tarnowskiej (Tarnów Land Museum, formerly the Muzeum Okręgowe w Tarnowie, Tarnów District Museum). It is housed in a historic railway station building at Plac Dworcowy 4. Its main attraction is a permanent exhibition of fragments of the “Panorama Siedmiogrodzka” (Transylvanian Panorama).
Jan Styka painted the panorama in 1897 in Lwów together with an international team of artists. The painting, 15 metres high and 120 metres in circumference, showed the capture of Sybin by Hungarian insurgents under General József Bem in 1849. It was shown in Budapest in 1898 and, for the last time to the public, in Warsaw in 1907. Styka later cut the work into fragments, which were framed and sold as independent paintings.
To date 38 such canvases have been identified, and the Tarnów museum holds twenty-one of them, including fragments acquired in recent years with the help of the Minister of Culture and the voivodeship self-government. The gallery also offers educational activities on General Bem, the Hungarian Uprising of 1848–1849 and the history of the railway and the Tarnów station.
