About the museum

The Muzeum Etnograficzne (Ethnographic Museum) has been in its present seat since 1984. The building is a historic suburban manor house from the late 18th century, with a former garden and a two-storey granary, situated on the main street of Tarnów. The museum’s beginnings were based on a small ethnographic collection, which today numbers more than 5 thousand objects.

The main place is given to exhibits showing the traditional folk culture of the Tarnów region: costumes of the Eastern Krakowiacy, products of local craft workshops, folk ceramics, sculpture and painting, and objects linked to annual and family rituals. The works of the women painters of Zalipie hold an important place.

In 1990 the world’s first permanent exhibition devoted to the Roma was opened here. It shows, among other things, the crafts of the various Romani groups in Europe, fortune-telling props and works by contemporary Romani artists. In part of the building temporary exhibitions are organised, and the museum runs competitions such as Malowana Chata (Painted Cottage), as well as museum lessons and art workshops.
