About the museum
The museum was founded in 1927 as the Tarnów Town Museum (Muzeum Miasta Tarnowa) on the initiative of Józef Jakubowski, deputy mayor. The first collections, mainly municipal documents, guild souvenirs and old weapons from the city armoury, were shown in two rooms of the tenement house at ul. Krakowska 12. In 1931 they were merged with the collections of the Diocesan Museum in the Tarnów town hall.
After the Second World War, on 13 March 1945, the Tarnów Land Museum (Muzeum Ziemi Tarnowskiej) was established; in 1949 it was nationalised as the Museum in Tarnów. From 1976 it operated as the District Museum in Tarnów (Muzeum Okręgowe), and since 1999 it has been subordinate to the self-government of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. In 2024 the institution returned to the name Muzeum Ziemi Tarnowskiej. Since 2013 it has been seated in the tenement house at Rynek 3.
Today the museum runs in Tarnów, among others, the Muzeum Ratusz – Galeria Sztuki Dawnej (Town Hall Museum – Gallery of Old Art), the Muzeum Historii Tarnowa i Regionu (Museum of the History of Tarnów and the Region), the Muzeum Etnograficzne (Ethnographic Museum), the Galeria “Panorama” and the Regional Centre for Education about Memory. In the region it includes the museum in the castle at Dębno, the Wincenty Witos Museum in Wierzchosławice, the Felicja Curyłowa Homestead in Zalipie, Koryznówka in Nowy Wiśnicz and the Dwór Museum in Dołęga. The building of the seat hosts exhibitions from the museum's collections and temporary exhibitions.
