About the museum
The Gród na Górze Birów is a reconstruction of a wooden defensive settlement from the time when the first Piasts ruled Poland. The last fortified stronghold was probably built here in the 13th century. It was protected by a rampart with a palisade, and natural rocks and steep slopes were used for defence. The square inside the fortifications was called the majdan, and at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries a small garrison of warriors lived here together with servants.
The rock outcrop (ostaniec) contains caves in which, according to archaeological research, people stayed as long ago as 30,000 years. Finds here include fragments of reindeer antlers, cave bear bones and flint tools. At the foot of the hill a barrow cemetery has been discovered.
The stronghold, styled as a medieval settlement, now houses thematic exhibitions in the hut of the settlement’s owner and in the warriors’ tower, which also displays finds from the excavations. For schools and groups, thematic trips, living history lessons and a guided “Spacer przez epoki” (Walk Through the Ages) have been prepared. The stronghold lies about 1.5 km from the castle and is managed by the same company, “Zamek”.
