About the museum
Ogrodzieniec Castle stands on the highest elevation of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, on Janowski Hill (515.5 m above sea level). The oldest, wooden stronghold existed here as early as the 12th century and probably burned down in 1241. In the 14th century Casimir the Great had a brick stronghold built on the site, which, together with other castles, guarded the south-western border of the kingdom against incursions from Bohemia and the Silesian duchies.
The greatest flourishing came in the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1561 the castle was brought as a dowry by Zofia, daughter of the former owner, to her husband Jan Firlej, Grand Marshal of the Crown, and the Firlej family held it for over a hundred years. In 1587 the castle was captured by the troops of Archduke Maximilian Habsburg, and in 1655, during the Swedish Deluge, the Swedes plundered it and partly destroyed it. After the Deluge it was acquired by Stanisław Warszycki, a magnate and Grand Steward of Kraków (wielkorządca krakowski).
Today the ruins are visited on a route that includes the gate tower, the Lord's Courtyard (Dziedziniec Pański), the hearth kitchen (kuchnia kurna), the high castle, the Steward's Tower (Baszta Kredencerska, the only one open to visitors), the knights' chambers, the Chicken Foot (Kurza Stopa) and the bastion. From spring to autumn an exhibition operates in the Torture Chamber, known as Warszycki's Executioner's Room (Katownia Warszyckiego), with old torture instruments. The castle is managed by the company “Zamek” from Ogrodzieniec.
