About the museum
The stronghold at Grzybowo lies near Września and is one of the largest strongholds that arose as the Piast state was taking shape. Before 1988 little planned research was carried out here, although as early as 1937 Olgierd Brzeski probed the site. Systematic excavations began in 1988 and continue to this day. Since 1997 the site has belonged to the Muzeum Pierwszych Piastów na Lednicy (Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica).
The rampart of the stronghold covers about 4.7 hectares; it is roughly rectangular with rounded corners and in places reaches about 9 metres in height. Entrances are visible on the eastern and northern sides. The stronghold was built among waterlogged meadows, with the stream Struga (Rudak) on the west side. The oldest phase, dated to the 920s and 930s, was a smaller, round stronghold about 40 metres in diameter with a wooden-and-earth rampart. In the middle of the tenth century, perhaps after a fire, the stronghold was rebuilt and surrounded by the much larger rampart that is visible today.
Inside, archaeologists discovered, among other things, a paved road by the eastern gate, houses, semi-subterranean buildings and workshops. The finds include vessels, iron tools, weapons, combs, beads, crucibles connected with craftsmen, and a hoard of coins and silver ornaments. Settlement in the stronghold declined around the middle of the eleventh century, and the question of why it was abandoned remains open.
