About the museum

The Izba Drukarstwa (Printing Room) has operated at ul. Żmigród 1 in Lublin since 2008. It was set up in the premises of the former Izba Pamięci Drukarstwa Polskiego (Memorial Room of Polish Printing), which was taken over by the Ośrodek “Brama Grodzka – Teatr NN” (Brama Grodzka – Teatr NN Centre). In the same building, from 1932 to 1951, the “Popularna” printing house was located, where, among others, Józef Łobodowski and Franciszka Arnsztajnowa had their works printed.

Dom Słów (House of Words), an artistic and educational institution of the Brama Grodzka – Teatr NN Centre, was established in 2014 on the basis of the Printing Room. Its programme addresses the significance of the spoken and printed word in culture and social life, and the role of free speech as a factor of change.

Permanent and temporary exhibitions are shown in Dom Słów. Visitors learn how the former typographic printing house and paper mill worked, what the work of the typesetter, printer and bookbinder involved, and discover the history of the “Popularna” printing house. A separate exhibition is devoted to Józef Łobodowski, the patron of the place. In the workshops, participants make paper by hand, set text, practise calligraphy and print on a printing press.
