About the museum
The museum is housed in the Kraków Gate, built under Casimir the Great after the Tatar raid of 1341 as one of two gates in the defensive walls of Lublin. From the mid-16th century the gate has had a barbican, and further storeys of the tower were added until the 18th century. In 1782 the octagonal storey was topped with a Baroque helm bearing the monogram of King Stanisław August.
The structure suffered considerably during the Second World War. In 1959 restoration and conservation work was carried out, the stone and brick decoration was uncovered, and the interiors were adapted for museum purposes. From 1965 the Historical Branch of the Lublin Museum was housed here, and since 1979 the gate has been the seat of the Muzeum Historii Miasta Lublina.
The exhibition “Historia Miasta” (History of the City) presents the history of Lublin from the settlement period (6th–8th centuries) to 1944. It shows archaeological objects, iconography and portraits of Lublin residents, ephemera and materials on local industry. From the top storey of the gate, at a height of about 36 metres, there is a panorama of the city.
