About the museum
The idea of a museum devoted to Józef Czechowicz emerged in the 1950s in Lublin’s literary circles, which wanted to commemorate outstanding writers connected with the region. The poet’s friends supported the initiative and declared that they would donate souvenirs and books with dedications. In 1963–1965 Tadeusz Kłak of the Bolesław Prus Museum in Nałęczów gathered the poet’s documents, letters and manuscripts and prepared the first script for the permanent exhibition.
The museum opened on 9 September 1968, on the 29th anniversary of the poet’s death. For almost thirty years it was housed in a former monastery building at ul. Narutowicza 10. After losing its seat in 1999, it operated for three years in a temporary seat in the Dworek Wincentego Pola, and on 9 September 2002 it began operating in the tenement house at ul. Złota 3.
The museum collects and presents materials from the field of 20th-century literature. The permanent exhibition is devoted to the life and work of Józef Czechowicz. The institution is a branch of the National Museum in Lublin and runs educational activities and literary competitions.
