About the museum
The Muzeum Witolda Gombrowicza is in Wsola, about 10 km from Radom and about 90 km from Warsaw, in a residence from 1914, built in the classicist style with elements of Art Nouveau and designed by August Furuhjelm. Between the wars it belonged to the writer’s family. After the war various state institutions were housed there, including a militia station and social care homes.
In 2005 the Radom County authority sold the palace together with six hectares of park to the Mazovian self-government, which handed it over to the Muzeum Literatury in Warsaw. Renovation ran from 2006 to September 2009, and the museum opened in October 2009 in the presence of Rita Gombrowicz, the writer’s widow. The institution is jointly run by the Mazovian self-government and the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.
The permanent exhibition “JA, Gombrowicz” leads through five spaces: the “Ferdydurke” café in the former room of Witold, the Polish room, a hall with personal objects, the Argentine-European room and the “czyStelnia” reading room. The museum collects Gombrowicz material, provides a reading room with the author’s works, translations and literature about him, and organises temporary exhibitions, museum lessons, the Międzynarodowe Panele Gombrowiczowskie (International Gombrowicz Panels) and the Nagroda Gombrowicza (Gombrowicz Prize).
