Izba Regionalna „Czarna Płyta”

Regional room in Pionki with memorabilia of the “Pronit” record pressing plant, the largest in Poland: records, matrices, sound postcards and gramophones.

About the museum

Pionki was home to the Pronit chemical works, where production of the vinyl compound for making gramophone records began in 1956. For more than thirty years, from 1957 to 1991, the local pressing plant was the largest producer of records in the country for listeners across Poland. The Pronit logo and a stylised nightingale were recognisable throughout the country and associated with Pionki, and many households in the town had large record collections.

The Izba Regionalna “Czarna Płyta” (Regional Room “Black Record”) was set up by the Municipal Cultural Centre in Pionki in the former Local Activity Centre at ul. Zakładowa 5. The official opening took place on 16 April 2016, during the first nationwide Festival of Songs from the Black Disc, which was dedicated to popularising music recorded on vinyl records.

The room displays a collection of old vinyl and shellac records, metal positives and negatives of records, sound postcards and gramophones. The collection is continually expanded through the community campaign “Rozkręćmy razem czarną płytę” (Let's Get the Black Record Spinning Together), in which residents donate items that have been kept in attics and cellars. Thanks to the room, the colourful history of the town, linked to the record industry, is remembered.
