About the museum
The idea of a municipal museum in Mikołów emerged in the 1960s, when local history enthusiasts began collecting memorabilia documenting the history of the town and its surroundings. In 2006 the Miejska Placówka Muzealna (Municipal Museum Unit) was set up in the former villa of the manufacturer Heinrich Koetz, known as the “Biały Domek” (White Cottage). In 2022 the unit became an independent cultural institution, the Muzeum w Mikołowie (Museum in Mikołów).
In 2024, after a general renovation, the museum moved to the historic villa of the interwar mayor Jan Koj at ul. Konstytucji 3 Maja 18, built in the 1930s as a house for civil servants. The building houses a permanent exhibition on the history of the town, a space for temporary exhibitions and an attic with objects relating to the former Silesian home, pharmacy and school. One room recreates the mayor's office in the Art Deco style.
The museum collects memorabilia of former residents of Mikołów and runs educational activities: it organises meetings, lectures, historical walks and workshops, and publishes books. Every month the Mikołowski Jarmark Staroci (Mikołów Antiques Fair), organised by the museum, is held on the market square.
