About the museum
The brewery in Tychy was officially founded in 1629, when the estate records noted that beer could be brewed on the manor farm every week, bringing considerable income. The founders and owners were the free lords of the Promnitz family. In the 19th century the brewery was expanded and modernised by Jan Henryk XI Hochberg, Prince of Pless (Pszczyna), who introduced electrification and a railway; thanks to the brewer Julius Müller, a golden lager known throughout Europe began to be brewed.
The museum opened in 2004 as the Tyskie Museum of Brewing and has operated under its current name since 2010. It is housed in the renovated building of the former Evangelical church from 1902 on the brewery grounds. The museum has also organised summer evening tours of the brewery with actors playing characters from its history.
The permanent exhibition presents ten episodes from four centuries: from the manor brewery of 1629, through the industrial revolution and the 300th anniversary jubilee in 1929, to the Second World War, the post-war brewing technical school, the People’s Republic of Poland period and the successes of the Tyskie brand. The visit begins in a cinema hall and a passage built from 11 thousand bottles, and leads to a glass dome, the heart of the exhibition.
