About the museum
The idea of a permanent exhibition on the history of the plant was put forward in 2000 by the director of the “Łaziska” Power Plant, Klemens Ścierski. The team that was set up quickly gathered the first exhibits, and the museum attracted more and more visitors, among them school pupils from the Mikołów district. In 2002 the Polskie Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Muzeum Energetyki (Polish Society of Friends of the Museum of Energy) was founded; it runs the institution as a non-governmental organisation. The new premises, with an area of more than 500 m², were opened on 9 December 2003 in the building of a former 60 kV electrical switching station from 1928.
The collections hold more than 6 thousand exhibits relating to the generation, transmission and use of electricity: machines, measuring and protective devices, laboratory apparatus, household appliances, light bulbs, electron tubes, old computers, radios and telephones. Among the more interesting exhibits are a surviving fragment of the switching station with a Swiss high-voltage switch, a steam turbine from the war years, a live-line working suit with a Faraday mesh, and an Edison light bulb from Rhodesia, which is lit once a year on the Festival of Light (Święto Światła).
The museum organises lessons, scientific shows and workshops, including the cycle “Fizyczne Fascynacje” (Physical Fascinations), concerts from the “Otwarta Scena” (Open Stage) series, and takes part in the Industriada festival. The institution is located in an active workplace, so a visit requires advance registration.
