About the museum
The idea of a museum in Tychy was already discussed in the 1980s, but a concrete initiative was taken in 1996, when the Tychy City Council adopted a resolution of intent to establish the institution. The institution was founded in 2000, and in 2003, thanks to an agreement between the city and Kompania Piwowarska (brewing company), the museum received premises in the historic brewery at 9 ul. Katowicka. In November 2004 the mayor issued an order to begin operations, and the official opening took place on 25 April 2005 with the exhibition “Sto lat z życia miasta. Tychy i tyszanie w XX wieku” (“One Hundred Years of City Life: Tychy and Its Residents in the 20th Century”).
Since July 2012 the museum has also had its seat in the former town hall building at 1 Plac Wolności, known as the Stary Magistrat (Old Town Hall), where it now presents temporary exhibitions. Since 2016 the museum’s branch has been the Tyska Galeria Sportu at the Municipal Stadium, the only museum institution in the country located on the grounds of a municipal stadium.
The collections are kept in the departments of History of the City, Photography, Art and Ethnology. They include, among others, banners, postcards from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, designs for the so-called New Tychy, photographs documenting city life, and a collection of drawings, paintings, prints and sculptures by artists from Tychy and Upper Silesia. The museum also runs museum lessons, city walks, workshops and publishing activities.
