About the museum
The Dom Pamięci (House of Memory) was established as a place commemorating the history of two nations, Polish and Jewish, who coexisted in one town for nearly five hundred years. It is meant to serve intercultural and intergenerational dialogue, and also the descendants of Płońsk’s Jews who visit the town of their ancestors. Tourists interested in the history of Płońsk and in the birthplace of David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s first prime minister, also visit it.
The seat is a brick, two-storey townhouse at 2 ul. Warszawska from the beginning of the 20th century, standing on the street that before the war was the centre of social and cultural life of Płońsk’s Jews. In the memory of residents the building survives as the old pharmacy of the Gutowski family, which operated here until 1975, and again in 1999–2005. The townhouse was revitalised for the purposes of the museum.
The Dom Pamięci belongs to the Miejskie Centrum Kultury w Płońsku (Municipal Culture Centre in Płońsk). The permanent exhibition “Spójrz – przypomnij!” (“Look – Remember!”) tells the story of the Jewish community of the town and its surroundings, of the pre-war diversity of Płońsk, and of the fates of people and their heritage cut short by the Holocaust. On the ground floor and on the two upper floors, photographs and souvenirs donated by residents and by descendants of former citizens of Płońsk are displayed.
