About the museum
The Archaeological Museum is one of seven branches of the Wrocław City Museum, which was created in 2000 from the merger of several municipal museum institutions. Wrocław’s sources trace the tradition of its archaeological collections to a museum founded in 1815, which later operated as an independent institution or as part of other museums. Since 1959 the museum has published the academic yearbook ‘Silesia Antiqua’.
The branch is housed in the Municipal Arsenal at ul. Cieszyńskiego, a Gothic building from the mid-15th century, one of the few medieval buildings in Wrocław preserved in its entirety. The building, erected around an inner courtyard, is shared by the museum with the Museum of Militaria.
The permanent exhibition ‘Silesia in Antiquity and the Middle Ages’ (Śląsk starożytny i średniowieczny) occupies three floors of the Arsenal. It tells the story of the region from the earliest traces of settlement to the development of medieval towns, and is complemented by reconstructions of ancient settlements and burial sites.
