About the museum
The first museum in Stargard, the Muzeum Miejskie (Municipal Museum), was founded in 1908 by mayor Albert Kolbe. In 1935 it was replaced by the Muzeum Regionalne (Regional Museum), covering the town and the former Szadek district (powiat szadzki), and a new seat was opened in 1939 in buildings next to the church. During the Second World War the collections were evacuated and largely lost; surviving objects went, among other places, to the Muzeum Pomorza Zachodniego w Szczecinie (West Pomeranian Museum in Szczecin).
The post-war museum was initiated in 1959. It opened on 21 July 1960 in the Brama Pyrzycka (Pyrzyce Gate), and in 1966 it moved to the Odwach (guardhouse) and a townhouse at Rynek Staromiejski 3. In 1973 the ruins of the Basteja were handed over to the museum; an exhibition of militaria opened there in 1986, and in 1993 the museum took over the neighbouring townhouse at no. 4. Since 2001 it has published the scholarly journal “Stargardia”.
The museum currently conducts archaeological and historical research, documents monuments and runs educational activities. In the Basteja it shows a multi-level exhibition on the town's history, from the period before it was granted its charter to the early 20th century, while the building on Rynek Staromiejski houses an exhibition on pharmacy in Pomerania and in Stargard.
