About the museum
The idea of a museum in Choszczno goes back to 1925, when the headmaster of the local gymnasium, Walter Schumacher, began efforts to establish one. In 1926 a county museum was set up in the gymnasium building, with departments of natural history, prehistory, regional history, sacred art and folklore. The collections suffered during the war, and after 1945 many exhibits were lost or scattered.
The present Muzeum Ziemi Choszczeńskiej was founded in 1995 on the initiative of the Regionalne Towarzystwo Historyczne Ziemi Choszczeńskiej (Regional Historical Society of the Choszczno Land), which has provided its professional supervision from the start. It was initially housed in a school in Krzęcin, and since 1998 it has been based at Zespół Szkół nr 1 in Choszczno. The museum's curator was the historian Dr Grzegorz Jacek Brzustowicz.
The collection contains several hundred movable historic objects from the Stone Age to the present day, including documents, photographs, weapons, ceramics, seals, coins and Gothic architectural elements. Since 2000, two large stone epitaphs from 1796 have been on display, and the collection also includes fragments of tombstones from the local Jewish cemetery.
