About the museum

The Muzeum Archeologii Podwodnej i Rybołówstwa Bałtyckiego (Museum of Underwater Archaeology and Baltic Fishing) in Łeba is the tenth branch of the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk. The building stands at the mouth of the Łeba River, next to the promenade and the harbour canal. The investment was part of a programme to build a network of modern museums run by the minister of culture, and its planned cost was about PLN 40 million. Construction works began in October 2020.

The building has an undulating façade covered with curved wooden strips, which refers to sails, and solutions that limit energy consumption. The branch is still under construction, and for now visitors have access only to a temporary exhibition on two floors.

The permanent exhibition, whose opening is planned for mid-2027, is to cover more than a thousand years of the history of shipping and fishing, from the early Middle Ages to the present. It will include underwater finds, wrecks, fishing equipment and the largest exhibit, a 25-metre steel fishing cutter. The exhibition will also present the work of the underwater archaeologists of the NMM, the flora and fauna of the Baltic, the culture of fishermen, fishing ports and maritime rescue.
