About the museum
The Butterfly Museum in Łeba is a private natural history institution and is regarded as the first butterfly museum in Poland. The first exhibition opened on 20 June 1999 at ul. Morska 3. The collection was built up from the holdings of an amateur insect enthusiast, who prepared most of the specimens himself and travelled the world in search of new ones.
The collection proved too large to show in one place, so part of it is on display at the museum’s second site in Władysławowo. The Łeba exhibition is now located at ul. Wojska Polskiego in the very centre of the town.
The exhibition features around 4,500 real specimens of butterflies, including some of the largest in the world, and other exotic insects, supplemented by objects related to insects. For children there is the Insect Cinema with Pszczółka Maja (Maya the Bee), and for older visitors there are stations with microscopes and an insect knowledge test.
