About the museum

The Amber Inclusion Museum (Muzeum Inkluzji w Bursztynie) was established in 1998 as a workshop in the Department of Invertebrate Zoology and Parasitology at the Faculty of Biology of the University of Gdańsk. The initiator was the head of the department, Prof. Ryszard Szadziewski. Gdańsk amber collectors, who wanted to restore the town’s pre-war tradition of collecting and studying amber specimens, took part in building the collections.

The collection comprises nearly 6,000 pieces of amber with more than 14,000 animal inclusions, about 95% of which are invertebrates preserved in Baltic amber. Most of the collections come from donations, and more than half is material that had not previously been sorted. The most valuable items are the holotypes – specimens on the basis of which new species have been described; there are more than 50 of them in the collection.

Part of the museum is the permanent educational exhibition “Life in the Amber Forest” (Życie w lesie bursztynowym), opened in August 2013 and financed from the European Regional Development Fund. Its main element is a diorama – the first model of an amber forest in Poland at a scale of 1:1. Visitors can see 41 animal inclusions, plant inclusions, pieces of raw and polished amber, and fossil resins from around the world.
