About the museum

The tradition of artillery museum work in Toruń goes back to 1923, when, by decision of Marshal Józef Piłsudski, the Officer School of Artillery (Oficerska Szkoła Artylerii) was founded and a Museum of Artillery Equipment (Muzeum Sprzętu Artylerii) was set up within it. The collections of this institution did not survive the Second World War. After the war the school gathered specimens of historic artillery equipment for teaching purposes, and on 14 January 1977 the Artillery Museum of the Higher Officer School of Rocket Forces and Artillery (Wyższa Szkoła Oficerska Wojsk Rakietowych i Artylerii) was established.

After the school was disbanded, in 2002 the museum was taken over by the Artillery Training and Armament Centre in Toruń (Centrum Szkolenia Artylerii i Uzbrojenia w Toruniu). In 2012 the collection of artillery equipment was handed over to the Land Forces Museum in Bydgoszcz, and the Artillery Museum in Toruń was established as its branch, which has operated since September 2013.

The exhibition “The History of Artillery – Origin and Development” (Historia artylerii – powstanie i rozwój) is presented in the building at ul. Sobieskiego 28. The outdoor exhibition consists of artillery and missile equipment, including the SNAR-2 radar station, the M-46 gun, the 240 mm mortar and the BM-24 launcher; this part is currently not accessible. The museum is the only one in Poland to hold a set of ballistic missiles, including the R-11M systems on an ISU-152K chassis, Łuna-M, Scud, Toczka and Frog-3.
