About the museum
The Benedictine abbey in Tyniec is one of the oldest monasteries in Poland. The exact date of its foundation and the identity of its founder are disputed: Kazimierz Odnowiciel (Casimir the Restorer, around 1040) or Bolesław II Szczodry (Bolesław II the Generous) is named. The first abbot was Aaron, later Bishop of Kraków. In the second half of the 11th century a Romanesque basilica and a monastic complex were built.
In the 14th century the monastery was destroyed by Tatar and Czech raids, and in the 15th century it was rebuilt in the Gothic style. In the 17th and 18th centuries the abbey was remodelled in the spirit of the Baroque and Rococo, but it suffered during the Swedish Deluge and the Bar Confederation. In 1816 the Austrian authorities dissolved the monastery, which then stood empty for more than a hundred years. In 1939 Benedictines from Belgium settled there, and reconstruction began in 1947.
The museum is housed in the cellars of the former library building of the monastery and operates under the care of the Fundacja Chronić Dobro. The permanent exhibition presents Romanesque architectural details from the abbey church, a replica of a chalice and paten from the tomb of one of the first abbots, and archaeological finds from post-war excavations, including Neolithic flint tools and pottery.
