About the museum
Władysław Orkan began building a house in Poręba Wielka in 1903, financed by the fee for his novel “W Roztokach”, replacing with it his ruined family cottage. The villa in the Zakopane style, designed by General Andrzej Galica, was completed in spring 1906; the joinery was partly made by Jan Bulas. The house was never fully finished, was poorly insulated and needed constant repairs. During the Second World War the writer’s stepson, Witold Folejewski, lived there with his wife and hid partisans; the building survived the war.
After the war the house served as a holiday home, and the Folejewski family made the writer’s study available to visitors. In 1973 the villa was bought by the gmina of Niedźwiedź, and from 1979 to 2004 it was a branch of the Władysław Orkan Museum in Rabka-Zdrój. In 2004 the building returned to the care of the gmina of Niedźwiedź. The house was entered in the register of monuments in 2007.
The museum displays a kitchen with an ethnographic collection and a carved wardrobe from 1867, the writer’s mother’s room, a veranda with wicker furniture and photographs, a study with a desk, a lamp and a piano, as well as a former salon with an exhibition on his literary work and a dining room with an exhibition on Podhale regionalism. Temporary exhibitions by artists from the region are shown in the barn. Since 2002 the festival “Majówka u Orkana” has been held here on the last Saturday of May.
