About the museum

The museum opened on 2 May 1987 on the initiative of Prelate Edward Fąfara. Initially it was located in the parish rectory in Szczawa, and in 1989 it was moved to its present premises, in a building next to the wooden chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, known as the Kościółek Partyzancki (Partisan Chapel). The move was partly financed by local villagers and by the Polonia in Canada.

The museum commemorates the 1st Podhale Rifles Regiment of the Home Army (1 Pułk Strzelców Podhalańskich Armii Krajowej) and its operations during the Second World War, carried out mainly on the slopes of Mogielica, Wielki Wierch, Kiczora and Wyrębisk. The collections document partisan activity in the Gorce on the territory of the former Home Army district, which covered the areas around Gorlice, Limanowa, Nowy Sącz and Nowy Targ.

The museum is a branch of the Muzeum Diecezjalne w Tarnowie (Diocesan Museum in Tarnów). The exhibition includes the regimental banner, soldiers’ uniforms and equipment, weapons, photographs, documents and publications, as well as urns with soil from the regiment’s battlefields.
